The English Village will see some improvements in coming months, and owners say construction of a new hotel will begin in June.
Visitors can expect to see work throughout the English Village and along a portion of the Bridgewater Channel as crews tear out old pavement and replace it next week. There are also plans to improve landscaping and lighting in the area. The Freedom Bridge Memorial Walkway that runs along the Bridgewater Channel will remain intact.
“This is a well-needed change to the Village, and it will be substantially better looking than it is today,” Virtual Realty Enterprises Chief Operating Officer Bill Snyders said. VRE is the company that owns the English Village property and is overseeing construction of a Holiday Inn Express hotel just next to the Village.
Work will be done in stages throughout the summer to minimize impacts to businesses and visitors, Snyders added.
Snyders said VRE is investing a significant amount of money into the improvements and said he expects they could be wrapped up in August. Construction of the hotel will begin as improvements to the Village are underway, which will impact parking in the area.
“Parking will be more at a premium especially with the new hotel. I know a lot of people view the lot as public parking, but it’s intended for English Village visitors and tenants,” he said.
He said parking will remain free, but encourages people who aren’t entering the English Village to park elsewhere.
